MULTIPLICITY

CLIENT: FIGMENT
LOCATION: GOVERNORS ISLAND, NYC | USA
PROJECT TYPE: PAVILION
YEAR: 2013
STATUS: COMPETITION ENTRY

Since Governors Island opened to the public in 2004, it has become a popular summer destination. The City of Dreams Pavilion forms part of the annual programme of art and cultural activities hosted on the island. Designs for the 2014 pavilion were expected to envisage the future of the city whilst responding to decline in economic and natural resources available.
‘Multiplicity’, a joint entry with artist Jack Doyle, is inspired by Jane Jacobs’ community centred approach to urban planning. A rigid structure of pallet racking represents the urban grid around which an array of building block manifests our ideal vision of the city: a billboard to communicate information, an ideas bank to share resources, a public realm of square, steps and belvedere to gather, a series of ramps to promenade and homely boxes to withdraw.
The pavilion is designed as an evolving structure allowing visitors to take ownership over the course of the summer.
Almost all elements are modular, hard wearing and can be sourced as second hand items. Waste during construction will be minimal and the majority of components can easily be re-used or sold on after de-installation.
