NEUBAU LANDESPFLEGEZENTRUM MÜRZZUSCHLAG

CLIENT: KAGes TDZ
LOCATION: MÜRZZUSCHLAG | AUSTRIA
PROJECT TYPE: CARE CENTRE
YEAR: 2014
STATUS: COMPETITION ENTRY | 3
RD PRIZE

Proposal for a new 110 bed care centre with close links to the existing district hospital in Mürzzuschlag (Austria).

The layout evolved around a landscaped central courtyard which acts as focal point and 'village green' for the development. At ground floor level treatment and communal facilities are grouped in pavilions around the central courtyard and offer a fluent transition between in- and outdoors. Residential accommodation is located on the two upper floors in an cross-shaped arrangement with four wings allowing departments to be broken down into smaller units in line with future models of care provision. The curved façade gives the building a strong, but gentle appearance as a sculptural volume set within a landscaped park and draws the eye towards the main entrances.

The scheme was a joint entry with jmarchitects in an open EU wide competition with 82 submissions. It was commended for its innovative concept and won 3rd prize.
